Skin types

Below we have listed skin types with their characteristics and important information for you, so that you can easily and conveniently determine and choose the right skin protection for yourself.
Type I – Celtic type
Characteristics:

  • very light skin colour
  • reddish or light blond hair
  • blue, green or light grey eyes
  • freckles
  • very light nipples

Reaction to solar radiation:

  • no tanning, instead formation of freckles
  • very often sunburn
  • very high risk of skin cancer

Self-protection time of the skin:

  • 5-10 minutes

Recommended sun protection factor:

  • SPF 30-50+
Type II – Nordic Type
Characteristics:

  • light skin colour
  • blond, light brown or dark brown hair colour
  • blue, grey or green eyes
  • Freckles often
  • moderately pigmented nipples

Reaction to solar radiation:

  • slow minimum tanning
  • frequent sunburn
  • high risk of skin cancer

Self-protection time of the skin:

  • 10-20 minutes

Recommended sun protection factor:

  • SPF 20 to 50+
Type III – Mixed Type
Characteristics:

  • medium skin colour
  • dark brown, light brown, dark blond hair, sometimes also black hair
  • brown, blue, green or grey eyes
  • hardly any freckles
  • moderately brown nipples
  • slow but progressive tanning to light brown

Reaction to solar radiation:

  • sometimes sunburn, there is a risk of skin cancer

Self-protection time of the skin:

  • 15-25 minutes

Recommended sun protection factor:

  • SPF 15-30
Type IV – Mediterranean Type
Characteristics:

  • brownish or olive skin – even when not tanned
  • brown eyes
  • brown or black hair
  • no freckles
  • dark nipples

Reaction to solar radiation:

  • fast tanning to medium brown
  • rarely sunburn
  • low risk of skin cancer

Self-protection time of the skin:

  • 20-30 minutes

Recommended sun protection factor:

  • SPF 10 to 20
